Description
Overview
The second-generation Toyota GR86 is completely new for the 2022 model year, and it follows the same rear-wheel-drive formula as the first-gen car. Developed again in conjunction with the Subaru BRZ, the 2022 GR86 will be powered by a horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine and a standard six-speed manual transmission.
This time around, Toyota has addressed our principal complaint with the last generation and has given the GR86 more horsepower for 2022. The new model is powered by a 2.4-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine that makes 228 horsepower, which is 23 hp more than the outgoing model's 2.0-liter mill. The result is a phenomenal driving experience for the price, a combo that's worthy of spots on our 10Best and Editors' Choice lists.
What's New for 2022?
After skipping the 2021 model year, the Toyota GR86 is relaunching as a 2022 model after a full redesign.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2022 Toyota GR86 starts at $28,795 and goes up to $31,325 depending on the trim and options.
The Toyota GR86 is a lot of fun for under $30,000. The upgraded Premium model offers a host of compelling standard equipment, including 18-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, leather upholstery, a rear spoiler, and aluminum pedal covers.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Like the first-generation model, the 2022 GR86 comes with a naturally aspirated horizontally opposed four-cylinder provided by Subaru. Acceleration was decently brisk in the outgoing model at 6.2 seconds to 60 mph, but the 2022 model should be slightly quicker thanks to a more powerful 2.4-liter engine that makes 228 horsepower.
A six-speed manual continues to serve as the GR 86's standard transmission, while a six-speed automatic is optional. During our first test drive, we noted that the more powerful engine felt livelier and sounds better while the car's razor-sharp handling provided thrills both on the road and on the Monticello Motor Club race track. At our test track, the our manual test vehicle snapped off a speedy 5.4-second time to 60 mph; the automatic was slightly slower at 6.1 seconds.
Despite the car's handling prowess, the suspension is forgiving enough to work as a daily driver. When we get a chance to test the new GR 86 and its twin, the Subaru BRZ, we'll update this story with test results.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The 2022 86 hasn't received fuel-economy estimates from the EPA, but the last generation earned ratings of 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined when equipped with the six-speed automatic. The manual model didn't fare nearly as well. When we get a chance to put the new model through our 200-mile highway fuel-economy test, we will update this story with results. For more information about the 86's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The EPA estimates the Toyota GR86 can accomplish 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway when optioned with the six-speed automatic transmission. GR86 using the six-speed manual get slightly lower EPA numbers at 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. When we get a chance to put the new model through our 200-mile highway fuel-economy test, we will update this story with results.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The outgoing 86 offered little in the way of driver-assistance features. Toyota provides a suite of safety technologies on the 2022 model, but only when the GR86 is equipped with its optional automatic transmission. For more information about the GR86's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features are likely to include:
Available automated emergency braking
Available lane-departure warning
Available adaptive cruise control
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
The GR86's standard warranty package consists of three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper coverage and powertrain coverage that stretches to five years or 60,000 miles. Toyota's two-year complimentary maintenance policy is a nice perk that the BRZ and the Mazda MX-5 Miata don't match.
All buyers also receive a free one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association and free admission to one of that organization's High Performance Driving Events.
Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
Complimentary maintenance is covered for two years or 25,000 miles

That long love affair cooled with the arrival of the sixth-gen (F30 chassis) 3-series in 2012. We felt betrayed as the magic from prior generations slipped away with the adoption of unfeeling electric power steering, a turbo four-cylinder base engine, and a general tuning philosophy at odds with the model's sporting roots. 2022 Toyota 4Runner Limited
After a 23-year run, the unthinkable happened: The 3-series failed to make the 10Best cut.
