Overview
BMW is arguably the brand most closely associated with sports sedans thanks to multiple generations of dominance by the 3-series four-door. For buyers who want a style upgrade, though, the 2025 4-series Gran Coupe delivers just that without compromising the driving enjoyment found in the 3.
The Gran Coupe's fastback roofline also cleverly disguises its more generously sized cargo area and rear hatch, all the better for helping you justify the upgrade. A 255-hp turbocharged four-cylinder is standard and can be had with either rear- or all-wheel drive; the M440i model is the performer though, with an overachieving 386-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six.
The high-tech curved display screen on the dashboard is a standout feature in an otherwise conservatively styled cabin, but we suspect most buyers will be more endeared to the Gran Coupe's taut road manners anyway. Those spunky driving dynamics, by the way, are more fun than what you'll find in similarly-priced rivals such as the Acura TLX, the Audi A5 Sportback, and the Volvo S60. For maximum performance,
you'll have to upgrade to either the four-door M3 or the two-door M4, both of which offer even more powerful twin-turbocharged variants of the M440i's inline-six.
What's New for 2025?
BMW has given the 4-series Gran Coupe the lightest of styling touchups for 2025. It now wears slimmer headlamps, a reworked grille with matte chrome accents, a restyled rear bumper with larger exhaust outlets, new exterior paint options, and updated wheel designs.
The Gran Coupe's iDrive infotainment system has been updated to improve usability, says BMW, and has a less dense menu structure. Elsewhere inside, a new two-spoke steering wheel replaces last year's three-spoke unit, but opting for the M Sport package swaps it for a new three-spoke wheel with a flat bottom design.
Under the hood, both the turbocharged 2.0-liter four in the 430i and the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six in the M440i have been updated with a new 48-volt hybrid system. The horsepower rating remains at 255 for the 430i, but the M440i's output is boosted 11 hp to 386. If you're shopping for an electric sedan instead, consider the similarly-styled BMW i4 (reviewed separately), which receives most of these updates for 2025.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2025 BMW 4-series Gran Coupe starts at $50,375 and goes up to $65,975 depending on the trim and options.
The price to upgrade to the more powerful M440i model is a lot, but luckily the base 430i, which we recommend, offers plenty to like. It comes standard with power front seats, a sunroof, in-dash navigation,
dual-zone automatic climate control, parking sensors, a 14.9-inch infotainment display, and a host of driver-assistance features, among other niceties. We'd suggest the Premium package, too, which adds heated front seats, lumbar support, a heated steering wheel, wireless charging, and ambient interior lighting.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Two turbocharged powertrains are on offer—both of them excellent and both featuring a 48-volt hybrid system. The base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the 430i model that makes 255 horsepower. The more powerful engine is a stonking 386-hp 3.0-liter inline-six.
Both engines come standard with an eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is optional. The suspension can feel a bit firm over big potholes, but the tradeoff is athletic handling that provides grin-producing entertainment on a twisty road.
